The Word that Does Not Change

The Word that Does Not Change

Especially in these very last of the last days, no one can marshal an argument that the Holy Bible is not 100% accurate in describing the state of this world.

God does not changeEVER:

“I the Lord do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. (Malachi 3:6)

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

One cannot deny that the world is a shambles. Despite all people being created in the image and likeness of God, despite their carrying a yearning for Him inside of themselves that cannot be satisfied by anyone or anything other than God, despite His Holy Word being preached throughout all the world, despite His Son Jesus Christ being given to a horrific death that His blood would cover their sins and make them justified before a just, pure, holy and righteous God… millions of people throughout the ages of human history have, by conscious will, turned their backs on God.

Why is this? How is it that we have become so arrogant, haughty and prideful that we have somehow blindly figured out that we have a better way than God has?

We have become like we once were…

The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. (Genesis 6:5-6)

God’s Word indicts without error across the ages… the testimony of the prophets Hosea and Isaiah from the Old Testament is as valid against the United States in these times as it was against Israel and Judea in those times (italic emphases mine):

Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites, because the Lord has a charge to bring against you who live in the land: “There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. Because of this the land mourns, and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the fish of the sea are dying. “But let no man bring a charge, let no man accuse another, for your people are like those who bring charges against a priest. You stumble day and night, and the prophets stumble with you. So I will destroy your mother – my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. “Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children. The more the priests increased, the more they sinned against me; they exchanged their Glory for something disgraceful. They feed on the sins of my people and relish their wickedness. And it will be: Like people, like priests. I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds. “They will eat but not have enough; they will engage in prostitution but not increase, because they have deserted the Lord to give themselves to prostitution, to old wine and new, which take away the understanding of my people. They consult a wooden idol and are answered by a stick of wood. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God. They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar and terebinth, where the shade is pleasant. Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution and your daughters-in-law to adultery. (Hosea 4:1-13)

I dare anyone to dispute the fact that, in this country, there is… no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land, or that there is only… cursing, lying, murder, stealing, adultery, the breaking of every norm associated with civilized behavior, and bloodshed upon bloodshed. “one nation under God” has changed to be “one nation without God”, and as Hosea says, the land mourns with all who are living in it wasting away. We have indeed turned to every manner of worthless idol, and have been unfaithful to the God who has in past times blessed this country with protection and prosperity. We have ignored God and His laws and commandments; we have done as much as demand that God be removed from every aspect of our lives, public and private. To me, the most horrendous consequence of our actions is that God will honor our ruinous and destructive desires, and remove His providence and protection from this country; He will abandon us to wallow in the filth of our depravity.

Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters wicked things. No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments and speak lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil. They hatch the eggs of vipers and spin a spider’s web. Whoever eats their eggs will die, and when one is broken, an adder is hatched. Their cobwebs are useless for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make. Their deeds are evil deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands. Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are evil thoughts; ruin and destruction mark their ways. The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads; no one who walks in them will know peace. So justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows. Like the blind we grope along the wall, feeling our way like men without eyes. At midday we stumble as if it were twilight; among the strong, we are like the dead. We all growl like bears; we moan mournfully like doves. We look for justice, but find none; for deliverance, but it is far away. (Isaiah 59:1-11)

Is God powerful to save? YES. Does God hear? YES… but the testimony of Holy Scripture says that He will not hear those who have willingly committed sin, and who remain in a state of separation from Him because they are unrepentant of that sin: note that God does not hear because of actions that we have taken: we have committed iniquity, we have hands that are stained with blood, we are guilty of the transgression of His laws and of His commandments, we have lied, we have spoken wicked things, we have committed evil deeds and acts of violence, we don’t know either His peace or His justice, we stumble like blind people constantly looking for the path forward to deliverance… and we are unwilling to confess these things before Him that we might have His forgiveness, peace and blessings, and be restored to fellowship with Him… the state in which we will be heard by God.

Just who do we think we are kidding, anyway??

God is not unclear as to where the blame lies, and this is as true for the nations today as it was for Israel when it was first spoken (italic emphases mine)…

“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, O house of Israel: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die. But if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life. Because he considers all the offenses he has committed and turns away from them, he will surely live; he will not die. Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? “Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live! (Ezekiel 18:25-32)

God’s standard of perfect righteousness demands that, as a just, pure, holy and righteous God, He bring punishment for all sin… but understand that although He must punish sin, it is not His desire to do so; it is His desire to be merciful to His people. However, he will not turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to sin… all sin will be punished, because He has no other option as a just God.

What is our reaction to be? Are we to consider God a petty tyrant that delights in punishing people for no good reason? NO… God, knowing our sinful nature, and our total inability to keep the Mosaic Law (or any other law, for that matter), made a way forward for us from that impossible position in which we were not only: 1) convicted by the Law, but also 2) condemned by the Law.

God’s way forward was His only begotten Son… Jesus Christ.

The only action that sinful humanity must take to achieve salvation, justification in God’s eyes and eternal life in God’s Kingdom is to believe in Jesus Christ, the One that God has sent, as the sacrifice for our sins that paid the penalty of death and eternal separation from God.

God’s Holy Scripture said… says now… and always will say…

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

We need to understand what God has done… God has not condemned the world at all, but has chosen to save it:

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:17)

But note that God has made ONE WAY forward… ONE:

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:18)

There are many who do not believe that Jesus Christ is the one way that there is to salvation and eternal life in the Kingdom of heaven… and many of those are stridently angry with those who have this belief. By the nature of what truth is, there can be only one premise that is true for what brings a person into fellowship with God that results in God justifying that person because He sees not that person’s sin, but the righteousness of His Son in that person… because that person has trusted God’s Son: as a result of that trust, Christ’s righteousness is imputed  to that person.

Any way to God other than Jesus Christ is false.

There is the testimony of God’s Only Son:

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

There is also, no matter how badly flawed it might be in most other circumstances, common sense. It is not ‘out there’ to flatly reject all other ways to God other than Jesus Christ, and I will tell you why. I plainly admit that Jesus Christ would be just one of many ways to God, were it not for one not-so-small item:

No other religion in world history has claimed its leader was resurrected from the dead.

Those who walked with Jesus during the course of His earthly ministry… all of them… saw Jesus Christ following His crucifixion. Many others saw Him, as well. If you do not believe that His appearance to many after His resurrection from the dead had the most profound impact upon His Apostles, consider this: every Apostle except for John was martyred in the years following Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, some in the most gruesome fashion imaginable.

Not one of them recanted his faith in Jesus Christ.

Holy Scripture, as I have already said and demonstrated, is the Word of God that does not change, and it is startlingly clear what the choices are:

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. (Galatians 6:7-8)

People mock God all the time, but they do it to their own peril. People scoff at God… they do not believe anything that He says, especially with regard to the promises God has made through His Holy Word. If you are one of those people, understand that God has known all about you from before the world was (italic emphasis mine):

First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. (2 Peter 3:3-10)

If you are a scoffer, a mocker, a blasphemer… if you deny Jesus Christ as God’s provision for the forgiveness of your sins… if you revel in your sins and could not care less about what God thinks… if you live your life as you please because you are all the god you need…

Remember that God does not change… but you had better do so by repenting of your sins and seeking God’s forgiveness that has come by the blood and the righteousness of His Son Jesus Christ, because…

For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. (2 Corinthians 6:2)

If you are an unbeliever, I will tell you with extreme urgency that you do not even know if you will live long enough to draw your next breath. Fall on your knees, and cry out to God to cover you with the blood of His Son Jesus Christ, so that His righteousness will be imputed to you, and your sins will be forgiven. Read the Holy Bible every day, embracing in all thankfulness what God has done for you, pray in all circumstances with hope and joy, and seek the companionship of other Christians in a Bible-believing church.

The Word that does not change will make a change in you.

If you are laughing me to scorn at this point, understand what is in store for you… as I have already said by the example of Holy Scripture, God is not mocked (italic emphasis mine):

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:11-15)
