Best Christmas Present… EVER
As I sit and look out my window, I reflect that the time has come at last… with the gradual change of the seasons, Christmas is drawing ever nearer. If you have any appreciable number of years on you, I am certain that you remember how “magical” a time it was. A fresh crispness was in the air, almost stabbing your lungs with an icy blast of invisible swirl that made you feel happy just to be alive. Rosy cheeks, a chilled nose, a ready smile and eyes filled with happiness, hands wrapped in mittens, head covered by a jaunty cap, your face and neck cloaked in a scarf, and draped in a winter coat… the world seemed “right”. Things mattered less, and people mattered more. Families were together, and… believe it or not… actually talked! In the season of giving, it was giving with a purpose, because your thoughts were concentrated on others, not yourself. Friendships were precious, secrets were kept, promises were honored, a handshake and your word were your bond, and country, home and hearth and GOD were supreme. Everything else took a back seat, just as it was supposed to do.
Oh, our nostalgic ache…
I don’t have to go into how the above has changed, but I will say unequivocally that I long for ‘the good old days’… why do you think that we who remember how things used to be wish they were that way again? The older among us will certainly fade along with our memories, but the younger among us will also certainly fade… but they will never have such vivid memories to lose… and they are the poorer for it.
The state of our present culture is such that we have literally demanded and legislated God out of it. In our pitiful struggles for meaning and substance, we have chased every hollow and shallow dream and phantom to achieve them, and we have come up empty. We have hopelessly chased after an elusive goal of happiness using every means imaginable to capture or produce it… without understanding that happiness is within us as the brilliant reflection of the One whose image we bear. We do not understand because we will not pay honor to He who created us, who blew into our mouths the breath of life that we might become living souls, and who offered His only Son Jesus Christ to a horrific death that we might know the free pardon of sin. Have we evolved so far in our secular humanism and believed so blindly and arrogantly in our ‘we can do anything’ attitude that we have figured out that we have no need of God?
I want to weep… what, O what, has become of us that we are so callous?
In my mind, Christmas has become far too focused on what it should not be focused on at all… blind commercialism. We give not because we want to, but because we have to. The act of true giving… one of the more selfless things that we thoroughgoingly selfish human beings are capable of doing… is virtually absent from our modern but O-so-much-better-and-enlightened-and-ever-improving society. The rush among us is not for solicitous thoughts and actions for others, but ‘what’s in it for me?’ In one way or another, there is always the dangling carrot of profit… for all of the wrong reasons.
The title of this post is ‘Best Christmas Present… EVER’. I want for myself, and for every other person alive, such a present.
In my mind, this is personal salvation by the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Only Son.
Personal salvation is the best gift one can ever receive:
-It is available to everyone.
-It is free for the asking.
-It is eternal.
-It immediately relieves anxiety, distress, and fear.
-You immediately become a precious, dearly beloved child of a King.
-It brings happiness so deep it can’t be explained, only experienced.
-You can tell others they can have it also.
It is not my intention to drown my reader in Holy Scripture, but the words of Jesus Christ are extremely powerful:
What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26-27)
That… my dear friend… is how much Jesus Christ thinks of you.
So this year, resolve to have the best Christmas present ever. Receiving the gift that literally keeps on giving not only in this life but in the eternal life to come is not hard…
Humble yourself before God, confess to Him your sins and that you know you are a sinner who is worthy of death. Repent of your sin and cry out to God to receive His Son Jesus Christ into your heart, that He would become your Lord and Savior and the master of your life. Ask Jesus to cover you with His precious blood and your sins will not only be forgiven but forgotten as well, and you will be marked with the Holy Ghost of God against the Day of Judgment. Read His Word and live according to His commandments… and to get started, you don’t even have to read the Holy Bible: the entire message of the Holy Bible is summarized in these simple and beautiful words of Jesus Christ:
Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
Don’t waste another second, not even one.
Your ‘best ever’ Christmas present awaits!
